A local company has high hopes of designing and building Rockford's first convention center at Riverside Drive and Interstate 90.

It's no surprise the proposed site is on the eastside of town near I-90. That was the recommendation of a $100,000 study by the city last year.

It's sure to be a coveted project, building Rockford's first ever convention and visitor's center. Landmark Development became the first company to unveil a vision for the multi-million dollar project.

The center would sit on 65 acres and total 200,000 square feet. Developers envision two hotels and a shopping center on the site.

Critics say the site would take away from downtown development and hurt the Metro Center, but Metro Centre board member Dan McGrail says it will actually help the struggling river district.

McGrail who also serves as an attorney for landmark says a new facility could free up Metro Centre dates for more lucrative concerts.

The deadline for companies to express interest in the project is March 3. Landmark says if they're plan is picked the convention center would be built by October 2005.
