State Sen. Barack Obama is counting on a large turnout among black and liberal voters in the Democratic primary. His closest rival in the polls, state Comptroller Dan Hynes is pinning his hopes on Chicago ward leaders like his father and their army of precinct captains.

Among the Republicans, front-runner Jack Ryan largely shied away from the media in the final days of campaigning after being urged to unseal records in his divorce from actress Jeri Ryan.

The primary will determine the candidates who will vie to succeed retiring GOP Sen. Peter Fitzgerald, and national party leaders view it as key in determining who will control the narrowly divided Senate.
