Prosecutors have charged a 39-year-old Rockford man with a misdemeanor after his stepson shot himself in the face.

David Hoffman turned himself in to detectives late Thursday afternoon. He has been charged with failure to secure a firearm.

Kyle Ulrich is in stable condition at Rockford Memorial Hospital. He had earlier been reported as critical.

Police say the boy found Hoffman's 25-caliber Beretta in an upstairs bedroom Tuesday. They say the gun discharged accidentally.

Winnebago County State's Attorney Paul Logli says people have to take special precautions when storing firearms, or they could face charges.
