Leaders with Rockford Pony Baseball and Softball are looking to raise a $500,000 to buy the 55 acres where Roy Gayle Park is located.
The Texas-based company that owns the land is looking to sell which means Pony Baseball could lose its home. The league currently leases the land for $1 a year, but that lease expires in 2005. A fundraising drive is underway to preserve the park that has been on the city's Westside for 42 years.
The group hopes to buy the land for about 10,000 an acre. They're applying for grants with the Rockford Park District and plan to sell advertising and naming rights to the ballpark and baseball diamonds.
