The Pentagon has alerted nearly 18,000 National Guard soldiers they will likely be deployed to Iraq late this year or early next year.
The plan announced Monday involves members of four major National Guard units. They would be part of a larger force expected to reach about 100,000 active duty and reserve troops ticketed for Iraq.
The states where these units are located include New York, Louisiana, Idaho, Oregon and Tennessee. The troops will be mobilized over the next several months. In Iraq, they'd replace the troops who've just started a one-year tour.
