Investigators say the cause of a fire that destroyed a historic Sycamore church won't be known for days.
The blaze that broke out Monday afternoon gutted the Evangelical Church of St. John. The state fire marshal and members of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms joined the investigation Tuesday.
Details are scarce at this time because the scene is too dangerous for manual investigation. Firefighters are waiting for heavy equipment to arrive tomorrow to assist.
Two firefighters were injured battling the blaze. Brad Ballenger was treated and released for burns to his right hand. Bill Reynolds underwent surgery overnight at OSF St. Anthony Medical Center in Rockford. Reynolds is in serious condition after his leg was caught under fallen debris.
Both firefighters where in the back of the church when an explosion ripped through the building.
