Rosalba Diaz's family owned a profitable business in Mexico, so when the family decided to open a store in Rockford five years ago, they hoped to see the same success. While business started off slow the Diaz’s eventually built a solid customer base.

Across the street from Diaz is Bella's beauty shop. Bella's has been open since May 1st, but getting the business off the ground proved to be a challenge.

The business struggled with getting assistance from both the city and banks, but despite the struggles Hispanic businesses are popping up all over the southwest side of Rockford and their businesses cater to more than just the Hispanic population.

Diaz actually gets the majority of her business from Americans, Italians and African-Americans, and with over 100 Hispanic-owned businesses in the Rockford area alone, the Rockford Area Hispanic Business Owners Association is being formed.

Since Hispanic businesses have their own unique challenges, having an association can help with starting a business. As the Hispanic population continues to grow the buying power is expanding, and this expansion is taking place across the stateline.

Belvidere, Loves Park and south Beloit are just a few of the surrounding towns joining the association. Over 50 businesses are expected to attend the first meeting, which will be held this Saturday at 10 a.m. at La Voz Latina, 412 Market St.
