He was a 14-year veteran of the Riverdale Police Department and the father of two teenage daughters. Wednesday night he was taken hostage and killed by a suspect in that Chicago suburb.
Police say Detective William Rolniak was transferring Adrian Humes from an interview room to the lockup area when Humes grabbed Rolniak's gun.
Humes had been arrested on charges of home invasion, kidnapping and attempted first-degree murder. Police say the 27-year-old Chicago man wasn't handcuffed because he'd been cooperative.
Officers say Humes forced Rolniak outside where he shot and killed the detective. Police say Humes was killed when he pointed a gun at officers trying to recapture him.
