Keeping children safe. That's the reason an Illinois lawmaker is asking state education groups to require teachers to get fingerprinted before they step into the classroom.

State Representative Careen Gordon wants organizations like the state board of education, the Illinois Federation of Teachers and the Illinois Education Association to back this legislation.

Illinois is one of three states that don't require fingerprinting. Now the state checks Illinois records using the applicant's name. But fingerprints are needed for a federal background check to find out if a prospective teacher has a record in other states.
