Check for Charity

Illinois taxpayers will be able to choose between a dozen charitable causes this year when they file their taxes. That's the highest number of check off options in the state's history. The money goes to a special state fund dedicated to providing grants related to the cause.

The Illinois Department of Revenue says the five check off additions to the tax forms due in April are:

1. Asthma and lung research
2. Leukemia treatment and education
3. Lou Gehrig's disease research
4. Military Family Relief
5. World War II Veterans' Memorial Funds

Any amount of one dollar or more can be donated. The amount is either deducted from the taxpayer's refund or added to the amount due. In tax year 2002, check offs raised a total of nearly $1.5 million.
