Report cards on the performance of public schools are about to go up on the Internet, where anyone with a computer can check them out.

Federal, state and private education leaders Thursday launched www.schoolresults.org, promising unprecedented access to information about public school performance. It will serve as a clearinghouse for new state report cards on education, including data broken down by school district and school building.

Under a new federal law, states must report a range of data, including teacher qualifications and achievement among all major groups of students.

The first states to take part are Delaware, Florida, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Washington.

The website is designed to present the information in a convenient and uniform way, so parents and policy-makers can make comparisons across districts and track student progress.
