Nearly 70 percent of Illinois voters support strengthening the federal assault weapons according to a survey released Wednesday by the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence.

Antigun advocates today used the survey's results to encourage Congress to toughen the ban against military-style weapons, which expires September 15. They say they want the law changed to prevent gun makers from making minor alterations to semiautomatic weapons to get around the law.

The survey of 821 registered voters says 68 percent of voters favor renewing the ban and 69.7 percent favor tightening it. The results were part of the 2003 Annual Survey of Illinois Voters conducted in September by the Coalition for Consumer Rights.
