In Washington Monday where Martin Luther King, Jr. is said to have given his most important speech, marching bands, drill teams and classic cars were used to celebrate the holiday.

This parade marched down the Washington, D.C. Avenue that bears his name. The D.C. parade is one of the oldest continuous events marking the slain civil rights leader's birthday.

D.C. council member Sandy Allen said the parade was originally organized to support efforts to get the day designated as a national holiday.
