The Reverend Harvey Nicholson says his calling in life is to be a preacher. But lately, he's been on-call, too.
Nicholson's not only the pastor at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in the northwest Illinois village of Elizabeth. He's also an emergency medical technician for the Elizabeth Community Ambulance Service.
Paramedics asked three years ago for volunteers during a church service. Nicholson began by driving the ambulance.
He's already finished training in respiratory therapy, pediatric care and emergency room procedures. Now he's learning cardiac care.
Nicholson says being an EMT lets him live out principles that he preaches in the pulpit, like compassion.
A fellow volunteer calls Nicholson the most devoted EMT the service has.
