Public Health Director Eric Whitaker says the threat from the virus is no longer statewide but remains in some pockets, including the Chicago metropolitan area. He says the worst appears to be over, although flu season typically lasts through April and there could be a rebound.

The federal government has made another 11,000 doses of flu vaccine available to the state. And health officials recommend seniors, children and sick residents seek them from a local health department or clinic.

So far this season, flu has killed two Illinois children, both in suburban Cook County. In the last year with complete data, 2001, 26 children died of flu or pneumonia.
