Ice Cream Truck Ban Reconsidered
For many of us the sound of music coming down the street on a hot summer's day means only one thing, the ice cream truck, but 23 News reporter Adam Behrman shows us why the streets are quiet in Loves Park, and introduces us to some people trying to change that.

For many an ice cream truck with children lined up at the window is a summer staple, but not in Loves Park.

"Last week when it was 95 degrees we were sitting out here with all the neighbors and thought how cool it would be if an ice cream truck drove by and then we kind of looked at each other and both had the same idea at the same time and started looking into it." says Ken Polhamus, a Loves Park resident.

Ken and Jen Polhamus think an ice cream truck would be a great way to bring in some extra money, but a decades old Loves Park ordinance prohibits it. Not wanting to break the law, they took the issue to Loves Park mayor Darryl Lindberg.

"I'm sure it can be worked out I mean many other communities throughout the United States have ice cream trucks on the street and I don't see a problem with it. I think it's kind of a nice thing once in a while." says Lindberg.

Lindberg says the ban on ice cream trucks is the result of child being hit by one long ago. But 11 year old Mariana Delgado thinks that's dumb.

"If they do buy ice cream the little kids are with their parents while the big kids, well they know that they should look both ways before crossing the street." says Delgado.

Mayor Lindberg agrees. If his city council jumps on board then maybe next summer Mariana will be able to get ice cream from her neighbors' truck.

Loves Park city council will discuss the issue in the codes and regulations committee on Monday night. The Polhamus family is waiting for the ordinance to be repealed before they buy a truck.

Having grown up in Chicago, I not only like the sound of the "ice cream truck" in the summer, but also remember the "rags and iron" man that used to go down our alley, picking up...rags and iron! And there was also a "knife sharpener" man that used to do the same thing.... I say let the ice cream truck roll!!
