Helping Chrysler Workers
Stateline generosity is reaching out to help local Belvidere Chrysler workers during tough times. Posted: 10:25 PM Jun 5, 2009Reporter: Max Seigle |

Nichole Brugger gets her hair done Friday at this Belvidere salon.
And tonight, this cut won't cut into her pocketbook, thanks to a discount exclusively for local auto workers.
"It does make it like not so, Oh my God I need a hair cut, I can't afford it," Brugger said.
Brugger lost her job indefinitely last month at a parts supplier for the Chrysler plant. So money's tight for the single mom.
"I have a daughter at private school, she just got braces, lost of my health insurance with the layoff," Brugger said.
"You have to help your community and with the Chrysler people all being laid off, then there the ones who we need to help," said Darlene Faulkner, Owner of Ashley Day Spa.
Faulkner says local auto workers make up about 30 percent of her clients.
And she says Brugger's not the only one piled up with concerns.
"They're scared, they don't know whether or not they're going to lose their homes and all that," Faulkner said.
Workers at this Rockford Denny's hear similar worries from their Chrysler regulars.
The restaurant's also offering them a 20 percent discount.
"I called my boss and said we've got to do something. Chrysler's a huge part of the community here," General Manager Jim Ozee said.
Denny's started the offer as soon as Chrysler declared bankruptcy. And they've served dozens of discounted meals for far.
"They say it's a great idea, any little thing helps at this point," Ozee said.
Little things in life, taking on more value these days around the table and in the salon chair.
The discount at the Ashley Day Spa in Belvidere runs for the rest of this month and includes part supplier workers, like Brugger, and Chrysler plant employees.
Denny's will offer the deal indefinitely to Chrysler workers at all of its Rockford locations.
Chrysler announced last month that it's laying off 992 workers indefinitely by the end of July as a way to cut costs during bankruptcy.
Some workers have already left the company after taking buy-outs at the end of May.

I really do appreciate the Town of Belvidere trying to help people in these hard times, but HELLO there are more than just Chrysler people without a job. Belvidere does not revolve around Chrysler. I do feel that prices need to go down, but I beleive that picking a certain company and giving only those workers a discout is a little bit much.

geez. they are getting 95% of their pay!!!! tough times!!! why don't you help the people who worked forever and now find themselves out of unemployment. This is a joke. If the unions would make some concessions but no they must make 30 dollers per hour to drive up the price of cars. do not even get the average joe started on this subject.

I think that what Ashley's Salon is doing is fantastic. They are helping the people who live next door to you and me. This is the kind of caring and dedication to a community that sets an example. You can not be a part of something and not react to help when the going gets tough. It shows that the owner and staff of the salon are doing their part and that the rest of us should follow their lead and do what we can. They are an inspiration. I live in Belvidere and have several family members and friends that have been affected by Chrysler's shut down. So you can bet we are all greatful to Ashley's for the help they are offering and will be sure to take them up on their offer. A great big THANK YOU to them.
