The Winnebago County Animal Services Division is putting dog adoptions on hold because of a deadly disease-affecting animals.

Parvovirus is a highly contagious and potentially deadly viral disease that attacks the intestinal tract, white blood cells, and sometimes the heart of the animal.

Some symptoms of Parvo are bloody vomiting and diarrhea and loss of appetite, often resulting the animal dehydrating and dying within 24 hours. Parvo is extremely contagious and is passed in the stools of infected dogs.

In order to prevent Parvo infections dog owners need to have their dogs vaccinated on an annual basis.
