A last minute contract extension will avoid a strike for workers at the Belvidere plant.

The United Auto Workers Union represents more than 400,000 autoworkers across the country. Right now those employees are reporting to work under a temporary day-to-day contract. The union's present contract is set to expire just before midnight on Sunday.

UAW is seeking a three to four year contract where job security, pension and health care benefits are at the forefront of negotiations. Contract talks come amid an expected record year of cars sales for the nations three largest automakers.

The Belvidere plant has 2,200 workers that could be affected if there is a strike.
