About 30 million americans suffer from diabetes. Another 40 million are at risk. Tonight, a local organization is raising money to raise awareness about the disease.
The Northern Illinois Diabetes Coalition held it's annual fundraising dinner and silent auction tonight. There was a dinner buffet and a band. Posters by Beyer Elementary School kids about diabetes were on display. Organizers say it's all about educating the public on how to prevent this dangerous disease.
"The other very important message besides eating appropriate portions and watching your weight is to get plenty of exercise every day."
Risk factors for diabetes include high cholesterol and blood pressure and obeisity. Minorities are twice as likely to develop the disease.
