More than 16,000 Americans have already fallen victim. Here's what you need to know to protect yourself:
It's called the Nigerian check scam. Victims are usually selling expensive items on the Internet. A scam artist claiming to be from Nigeria or other countries makes an offer.
The fake buyer sends a cashiers check for thousands more than the asking price. The person then asks that the difference be wired back, but after sending the money, victims learn the check wasn't good.
So here's some advice: be suspicious of out of country offers like this, and wait until the check you deposit clears and verifies at your bank.
