Khaled Dumeisi appeared Friday before U.S. District Judge Suzanne B. Conlon. It was his first appearance since late July when he was taken from his cell in a federal lockup to a hospital with heart trouble.

Dumeisi appeared fit at his arraignment.

The 61-year-old from suburban Chicago Oak Lawn is accused of spying in the U.S. on Iraqi dissidents who opposed Saddam Hussein's regime.

He is not charged with espionage, a crime that pertains only to spying on U.S. defense secrets.

He is charged with failing to register as a foreign agent, conspiring to avoid registering, lying to an immigration officer and lying to a federal grand jury.
