Authorities said 20-year-old Matthew Sloss of Lake Zurich and a male friend entered the park after hours about 1 a.m. and were on a West Bluff outcropping when the accident happened.

Authorities were called at about 3 a.m. Sauk County Coroner Betty Hinze pronounced Sloss dead at 5:55 a.m. from severe head injuries.

Retrieving the body required assistance from park rangers and other rescue personnel. A rescuer had to be lowered over the bluff to place the body in a basket for retrieval.
