The Food and Drug Administration has cleared the return of most fresh spinach to grocery shelves. Only recalled produce from three counties in California's Salinas Valley is still banned, suspected in an E-coli outbreak two weeks ago. Spinach scare aside, government scientists report food may actually be safer now than at any time in the past ten years. Doctor Robert Tauxe of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention gives part of the credit to inspections and better practices by the food industry itself. As he puts it, "The food is actually cleaner to begin with." Experts say consumers are also doing their part, handling food more safely once they get it home.
