Back to School, Again

Hononegah High School students will be back in class Tuesday. Monday night the Hononegah School board ratified the tentative agreement reached Sunday night between the teachers union and the district.

Within a few minutes, the Hononogah School board secured that the hallways will no longer be emptied. The board voted unanimously to accept a tentative agreement.
Sunday night section eight dealing with teaching assignments was finally a language both sides could agree on.

Hononegah School Board President Dave Kurlinkus says, “The language gives flexibility and gives four options that the board has on the 6th position.”

The five to two class period debate will now be handled like this, the board will first offer an additional class to qualified part time teachers. If that criterion is not met the position will be advertised to fill a single full time or several part time positions. After those two are attempted, teachers will be asked but not forced to take a sixth period. In the past Kurlinkus says all were a concern and many worried about what could happen in the future.

Other provisions include the fact that a sixth period assignment does not carry over year to year. Teachers will also be compensated in their pay if they do agree to teach a 6th class. And in a tough budget time, no assignment of 6th class will in no way be used to reduce staff through the RIFF process.

The three-year agreement is retroactive to Aug. 20, 2003.

Here is how students will make-up the 15 days that were lost during the work stoppage.

Monday, Nov. 3 will be an Institute Day and Friday, Jan. 16 will be a full day of student attendance.

Monday, Jan. 19, 2004
Monday, Feb. 16, 2004
Monday, March 1, 2004
Monday, April 12, 2004

Nine days to be added to the end of the school year (June 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11) if no snow days are used.
