No state was hit harder by the mosquito-borne illness in 2002 than Illinois. Almost 900 were afflicted and 66 were killed, but spokeswoman Tammy Leonard with the state Department of Public Health says today there haven't been any reported human cases this year.

Even so, Leonard agrees with experts who warn that the potential for West Nile cases still exits.

She says populations of Culex mosquitoes, thought to be the primary carriers of West Nile, increase later in the summer when weather is hotter and drier.

She points out the first human case last year was not reported until August 6.
