State Could Save Money By Using Canadian Drugs

The answer: providing state employees and retirees with lower-cost Canadian prescription drugs. A spokeswoman says the governor appointed two people to prepare a report about the plan's feasibility.

She says the combined annual savings would include about $56.5 million from the state budget. The report will also look into Canadian safety precautions similar to those imposed in this country by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The FDA and drug companies have argued that using Canadian suppliers would present health and safety issues.
