Gov. George Ryan throws a curve ball, signing a bill that allows 12 and 13-year-old kids to officiate sporting events.

Beginning July 1, 12 and 13 year olds will be allowed to officiate not for profit youth club, park district and recreation sporting events, so long as loose restrictions are met.

A parent or guardian must be present for the game. The child can only work 10 hours a week, four in a single day. And the child must be three years older than the players, unless a 16-year-old is officiating the same event.
