Tis is the word Wednesday from the Illinois State Board of Education.

The board released results of the latest round of statewide standardized tests.

State Superintendent Robert Schiller says an initial review shows 627 schools failing to meet standards. That's about one of every seven schools.

They will be required to let students go to other schools within the same district this fall.

Schiller says the number of schools in this category could double next year.

Schiller says test results show progress in closing the performance gap between rich and poor students, and between white and black and Hispanic.

He calls the overall results unacceptable.
