Right now the largest private health insurer in the state, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois, has reversed course. Now it will cover a shorter, more expensive type of radiation therapy for breast cancer patients. A number of physicians had been lobbying for the change. In many other states Medicare and Blue Cross Blue Shield health plans did pay for the for partial-breast radiation therapy called Mammosite. The procedure costs on average about $2,500 more than standard radiation.
