The early stage of work to repair bridge abutments on the Interstate 39/90 bridges spanning the Rock River at Newville is underway. Nighttime lane restrictions occur from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., Monday through Thursday evenings, until Sept. 24.
Motorists may encounter traffic delays at those times as construction crews work on crossover roadways.
From Sept. 25 to Oct. 13, the westbound bridge will be closed. Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction and routed to the eastbound bridge. In addition, the ramp from WIS 59 to I 39/90 southbound will be closed.
Motorists are urged to use alternative routes during this phase of the project as lengthy delays could occur. Alternative routes will be posted. Signs will direct drivers to US 14 and US 51 through Edgerton. A detour will also be posted for the ramp closure at the WIS 59 interchange. Signs will direct travelers to WIS 59 and WIS 26 through Milton.
Electronic message boards are in place while the improvements are underway. Estimated delay times will be included on the signs so motorists can determine a course of action as they approach the Newville area.
The project entails replacing deteriorating back walls on the bridge abutments. Additionally, a one-half mile segment of I-39/90 south of the Rock River will be resurfaced.
