ConAgra says it will close the Grist Mill August 20th because it needs too many improvements to remain cost effective. ConAgra has owned the plant since 1998.
The closing will put 71 employees out of work.
The factory got its start in 1930 as the Fred W. Amend Company and made Chuckles, a chewy candy that came in five colors. The factory sill makes jelly fruit candy in the shape of cartoon characters, sharks and dinosaurs.
ConAgra spokeswoman Kay Carpenter says a severance package will be negotiated with the workers' union, Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco & Grain Millers Local 316.
