The snowballs flew in barrage after barrage at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, but Saturday's fight fell far short of the record that organizers hoped to achieve.
After two teams at the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus battled back and forth for about 45 minutes, organizer Mike Basak acknowledged the turnout was nowhere near the record for a snowball fight.
The Guinness Book of World Records lists the record as the more than 3,700 students who turned out to throw snow at Michigan Technological University in 2006.
Basak said his guess was that 2,000 or more took part Saturday, but other observers estimated the turnout at hundreds of students, not thousands.
Basak said the lake shore team won the battle, and the only injuries were minor bumps and scrapes.
He said the organizers want to hold another snowball fight, either this winter or next winter.
