A Lee County grand jury indicted Amboy Mayor Leroy Stambaugh with official misconduct, obstruction of justice and misdemeanor theft.
State's attorney Paul Whitecombe says Stambaugh is accused of stealing donations from a jar at the Amboy Depot Museum earlier this month. Volunteers at the museum alerted authorities to the theft, which totaled less than $300.
The building, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, served as the northern division headquarters of the Illinois Central Railroad in the 1800s. The museum is free to the public but is supported by donations.
Stambaugh was taken into custody Thursday and released on $10,000 bond.
