Illinois Senator visits Ethiopians displaced by flood

DIRE DAWA, Ethiopia (AP) -- U-S Senator Barack Obama Thursday is continuing his tour of Africa in eastern Ethiopia, where he visited a sprawling tent camp for people displaced by devastating floods.

The Illinois Democrat told Ethiopians that the American military will continue to help the decimated region.

U-S Navy personnel began relief operations two weeks ago in the eastern town of Dire Dawa, where the first flash floods ripped through the town on August Sixth. And U-S naval engineers have helped set up 60 enormous canvas tents that are housing 27-hundred people.

U-N officials say flooding caused by heavy rains in Ethiopia has killed more than 600 people and displaced tens of thousands more.
