West Nile Virus

The Department of Public Health is reporting a dead crow found Sunday is a carrier of the West Nile virus.

This is the 14th bird in Illinois found to carry the virus since surveillance for the mosquito-transmitted disease began May 1.

Champaign, Clark, Cook, Dosage, Edgar Jackson, Kane, Vermillion and now Stephenson County all have had reports of the virus.

Although no human cases of West Nile encephalitis have been reported, State Public Health Director, Doctor John Lumpkin, says this is a reminder that the virus is present and precautions should be taken to guard against it.
