State officials say they're conducting a 17-day crackdown on drunken drivers that centers on Labor Day weekend. Illinois Department of Transportation Secretary Timothy Martin says more than 40% of the state's traffic fatalities involve alcohol. He says the "You Drink & Drive You Lose" campaign is a $1.7 million education and enforcement effort.
Statewide, 248 agencies are teaming up with the Illinois State Police to conduct more than 220 roadside safety checks and nearly 14-hundred saturation patrols. Motorists can also expect police to check for compliance with seat belt laws. The campaign began August 18th and runs through September 4th.
