President-elect Barack Obama is not wasting any time getting to work as he returns to Washington
"The people can't wait. We have an extraordinary economic challenge ahead of us," said Obama. Mr. Obama wants to stop the country from falling deeper into a recession. He met with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to help push his economic stimulus proposal. The $300 billion dollar imitative would give tax breaks and incentives for businesses to expand and create new jobs. Even though everyone wants to drive the economy forward, lawmakers say they need more time and both parties need to be involved.
Majority leader Harry Reid says, "It has the be bipartisan we have to work with the Republicans. Everyone acknowledges, I think without any question, that the country is in an economic crisis."
The economy is just one thing on Mr. Obama's to do list. He now has to search for a new Commerce Secretary, since New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson took his name out of the running. A federal jury is investigating how a political donor to Richardson landed a big transportation contract in his state.
