Harrison Avenue Reconstruction

Construction crews will be hitting the streets on Harrison Avenue between Alpine and Mulford completely redoing a surface that has seen its share of wear and tear over the years. That 1.5-mile stretch of road is lined with businesses and residences.

Jack Stone has lived off of Harrison Avenue. He remembers the last time the city took on a project in this area.

"They really need to do a better job than they did 15 years ago when they redid it," Stone says.

Stone is one of many residents and business owners whose travels will be made difficult over the coming year due to the construction. However, he has found a way to adjust the last time around.

"My driveway comes in off a side street, we'll just go up to Charles St. and work our way into town," he says.

Meanwhile, Harrison Avenue businesses were enjoying one last quiet day before the construction begins.

"We are expecting a decrease in business, we're not really sure, but we hope our regular guests do come back as often as they can," says Christina Minneci, a shift manager at Culver's.

"It’s gonna slow down the business a little bit, but I think it’s the right thing for the city, so we'll take it," says Sam Jao, general manager of the Sunrise Restaurant.

Construction will make it difficult to get to local businesses. However they are optimistic the project will benefit everyone.

"I think for customers coming here, it'll be an improvement when it’s done," Minneci says.

"For this side of town, it’s going to be hard to get to the other side, so we'll stay at home this time. Overall, I really think we're ready for this, I mean, everybody's talking about it so let's take this as a good thing for all of us," Jao adds.

The project will wind up costing the city about $11.5 million. It involves removing and replacing the existing roadway, improving the landscape, and improving the lighting. The project is expected to be completed by next fall.
