In tonight's Economy Rockford segment.. we visit a local debt collection agency. Which says more of us aren't paying up. 23 news reporter Max Seigle reports how much less money is being collected.
Rockford Mercantile President Richard Brown says the number of delinquent accounts sent to his collection agency... Hasn't changed much over the last year.. but what *has changed, and changed dramatically ... Is the ability to pay .
" Loss of one income.. loss of 2 incomes.. unemployment running out .. over-obligated...Their paying what is essential to them first.. heat.. lights.. rent mortgage payment.. gas and then the credit card bills and medical bills come."
On average.. the agency is getting paid on only 2 of every 10 accounts listed with them.
" We are accepting reduced payments from what was previous agreed upon..we also suspend payments until their financial condition improves."
This is a change from in the past .... debt collectors understand the challenges many of us face ... And are willing to work with them to help get through these tough times. In Rockford, Max Seigle, 23 News Right Now.
