The family of a nine-year old boy struck and killed by a District 205 school bus is looking for justice. The family says unanswered questions are making their grief even harder to bear.

"We are going to keep a close eye on the decision that the board has, the decision that the police department has, the decision that the state's attorney's office has because this truly is a bullet that will be heard around the world," says Mary Lou Castro of the League of United Latin American Citizens.

Miguel Angel Carreno was hit by a Rockford school bus earlier this month while walking to school. Tuesday night, his family and friends gathered at Rockford's school board meeting said this case has gone beyond the tragedy of a young boy's death.

"We've always heard about the sleeping giant which is the Hispanic community and incidents like this is what wakes them up and brings them together as a community," says Castro.

Carreno's family say they were treated unfairly from the start. They say they learned of his death from a family friend, instead of police and that the department has not kept them informed as the investigation progresses.
Part of the problem is a language barrier. Family representatives are pushing Illinois legislators to adopt a new law they hope to name in Miguel's honor.

"Any community that has more than 20,000 individuals of any nationality that the police department of that area have the appropriate department that would reach out to that community in their language and in their culture,"says Castro.

The family is also calling for a close examination of how bus drivers are hired. The driver who hit Carreno is on administrative leave, pending an investigation into what happened in the moments leading up to the crash. Miguel's family say he would never just dart into the road.

"He was so alert all the time, he had another brother and sister he would walk with and say be careful all the time, watch where you're going," says Lucrecia Carreno, the victim's aunt.

"We just want it more secure for the kids. today it's us, but tomorrow it can be your guys' kids. We just want it more secure for the kids that's all we want," says another aunt, Lourdes Carreno.

School administrators are not commenting on the case until the Rockford police investigation is complete. In the meantime the 27-year old bus driver Leah Robinson will remain on paid administrative leave.
Carreno's family say bus drivers need to be on the highest alert when dealing with the safety of our children.

My prayers are with this child and his family. When the investigation has been completed, the information will be released. This is America, with English being our language. People need to assimilate to the US, not the US cater to them. They need to learn our language, not the other way around.

My heart goes out to the family but the plain fact is THEY should know OUR language BEFORE they come here. Anyone coming to reside in the US should have the language skills required to speak with officials and authorities. The lack of information and communication is not the fault of the police or the school board. It is the fault of a non english speaking family. It is a tragic accident and nothing else. The family should not be entitled to any kind of monetary restitution. As far as Miguel's Law goes that money would be better spent on programs to teach non-english speaking residents to speak english effectively so they can communicate with others. The safety of the children of their community is at stake. No other country in the world spends the money we do to accomodate a different language or culture. I am of hispanic decentso this is not racial. My Grandfather immigrated here only AFTER he had learned the language. He didn't lack of communication on anyone but himself.
