Just before 11 a.m. Monday police scanners lit up with reports of an officer down. Within minutes dozens of police cars and emergency vehicles arrived here at the Amoco gas station at Auburn and Central, where they discovered an officer lying on the ground, fighting for his life.

An undercover police officer is rushed to the hospital after an altercation with an apparent car thief at this gas station. A swarm of Rockford police officers respond to the scene.

"There were Rockford police officers at the car wash actually. When the call went out they left their car and ran over and we're here in a matter of second. It all happened very quickly,” explains Iasparro.

Local business owners and area residents surround the intersection as police collect evidence and search for clues.

According to police just before 11 a.m. a suspect driving a Honda Pilot rammed into an officer working undercover for the Northern Illinois Auto Theft Task Force. The officer fired shots at the driver who then crashed into this dumpster and fled the scene.

The vehicle was recovered minutes later in this employee parking lot behind the Logli's on Rockton Avenue, the vehicle was locked up and no one was inside.

One of the only witnesses to all of this who gathered the officer's badge and wallet scattered on the ground and gave them to police. The local man did not want to appear on camera, saying he feared for his safety, afraid of retribution from the suspect involved.
