Water Safety and No Wake Zones

Heads up on the roads, and heads up on the water. Sixteen people died and more than 100 were injured in boating related accidents in Illinois last year, and to keep our waters both fun and safe this year we're being reminded of a few rules.

By law, if you're under 13 and on a boat you have to wear a life jacket, and we're all required to wear one on a jet ski or personal watercraft.

Also, safety educators say it's best to keep alcohol off the boats.

If you're on the Rock River, there are a couple of no wake zones and a couple of closings in effect on July 4th. No wake is allowed from 5 p.m. to midnight between the Whitman Street Bridge and Fordam Dam. A no wake zone is in effect from 6 until 9 p.m. at Shorewood Park.

Meanwhile, the Rock River will be closed between Chestnut and the Fordam Dam, as well as between Morgan and the Fordam Dam. Those closures are in effect from 9 p.m. until the end of July 4th fireworks.
