VILLAGE OF PEWAUKEE, Wis. (AP) -- Police say a repeat drunken driver from Waukesha County used a portable air compressor and a balloon to get around the ignition interlock device on his van.
Because 45-year-old Paul Rupple had five prior drunken driving convictions, the device was installed that requires him to blow into it to start the van. If there's a hint of alcohol, the vehicle won't start.
A neighbor called Village of Pewaukee police last week to say an intoxicated Rupple was headed for his van. Officers found him behind the wheel with balloons strewn about the vehicle. Police say he used the air compressor to blow up a balloon and then used the balloon to blow air into the interlock device.
Rupple is charged with drunken driving as a sixth offense, a felony, and tampering with the interlock device, a misdemeanor.
