The accident happened on North Second Street North of the Auburn Interchange and just south of Loves Park. Rockford Police say a car heading North drove through the grassy median and slammed head-on into a car heading South on 2nd Street. The two dead were in the car heading North. No names are being released at this time. There is no explanation as to why the car went across the median. Traffic is still being diverted around the area and police expect it to be blocked off for a couple more hours. Northbound traffic is re-routed of onto Forest Hills Road.
