Murders, robberies, aggravated assaults and other crimes increased 5.7 percent in the Midwest last year. Nationally, the overall increase in violent crime is two and a half percent, which is the largest percentage increase since 1991.

In Milwaukee, the number of violent crimes rose from 4,637 in 2004 to 6,142 last year. In Madison, the number dropped from 841 to 839.

The FBI data is compiled from reports by more than 12,000 law enforcement agencies.

Criminal justice experts say the figures are the result of the nation's complacency in fighting crime, dramatic declines in the 1990s and abandoning crime prevention programs.
