Tuesday night the Rockton Village Board took a stand on a proposed residential development in Rockton.

Residents north of Rockton Road on the west side of Prairie Avenue have acres upon acres of land. Many say they moved to that area to be left alone, but developer Dyn Cannell LLC wants to be a welcomed to the neighborhood. But residents don't want anything to do with his proposal.

Rockton Village President Dale Adams broke a tie vote. The Village Board is now recommending that the Winnebago County Board approve the development. Cannell is looking for a special use permit to change 123 acres into 112 homes. Residents have given several hours of testimony regarding lot sizes, contaminated groundwater, and overcrowding in the Shirland School District. Residents wonder who will personally gain from this development.

Mark Taylor who is against the project says, “We have a good group put together and believe me come election time we will be here supporting opponents. We're going after people who are not speaking for the people."

Colleen Blaney lives in Caledonia. She came out to the meeting because she says there is a trend going on in many communities.

Blaney tells 23 News, "We came out here because we see something that happened in Caledonia. We see people who are saying wait a minute this is too big or wait a minute those lot sizes aren't right. Wait a minute school impact fees aren’t in place and development keeps on a rollin’.”

Residents want to see the Winnebago County Board send the plan back for further study. Mainly many want to see the outcome of a heavy metals report. Since this is a special use permit a super-majority vote is needed. The Winnebago County Board will make the final decision Thursday night.
