Even with dark upon us, rescue works are fighting to find the body of the 17-year-old-victim. They first arrived at a pond near the Chicory Ridge subdivision off Roscoe Road close to 5:30 p.m. Monday evening. Witnesses told authorities that the victim was trying to swim across the pond when he suddenly went under in the middle of it. Nine divers worked the waters for at least an hour but murky conditions made them stop. Boats remained on the water using cameras to try and locate the victim. As all of that played out, nervous neighbors were outside watching the rescue mission scene. One of them shed a little more light on what happened after speaking with a boy who initially went after the victim.
"The kid that was out there was trying to swim across the lake. When he got a little more than half way through he started yelling for help, but the kids didn't realize he was serious. They thought he was goofing around and when they realized he was in trouble the other teenager swam across but couldn't find him and then they called 911," Neighbor Sandy Ambrosini said.
Authorities haven't released the identity of the victim yet or said if he lived in subdivision. But we have unconfirmed reports from neighbors that the 17-year-old victim was student at Hononegah High School. We happened to see the school board president out here as well.
The Harlem Roscoe Fire Chief said this is the first time that he's seen trouble at this pond, which is not guarded. He didn't know if any adults were around when the victim went under.
