While Hurricane Gustav slams into Louisiana, several Stateline residents head south to help. Andy Schultz, owner of ATS Medical Services says he was asked by FEMA to take two of his ambulances south to assist with the high number of 911 calls. Schultz is currently stationed in Jackson, Mississippi and he says people are happy to see him, ."There'd be people just thanking us so much and saying where are you from and we're like Rockford Illinois and they're like oh you came all that way to help us and you know we're very very grateful." Stateline Red Cross volunteers have also been quite busy these past few hours. Jean Burton from Stockton went south to assist in a shelter located in Alexandria, Louisiana. She says, "People have gotten ill. We've had people that needed dialysis so we've had to make arrangements for transportation. We've had some mental health issues." As the hurricane moves away many thousands of people will need access to unspoiled food. Greg Larson from Rockford is also working with the Red Cross in Alexandria. He says that although he has already put in some long days delivering meals, he expects the real work to begin tomorrow, "That's what everybody is out here to, you know. We're just here to help and we'll do it as long as we can." Most of the Red Cross volunteers will be down there for the next three weeks, at which time another group of people will go down for another three weeks to continue the work. All three local volunteers say the best reward is knowing they are making a difference. Jean Burton says the Red Cross is still in great need of comfort items such as pillows, blankets, and towels. She says we can make donations at our local Red Cross chapters.
