Three Rockford schools received quite the makeover this summer, and it didn't require a big budget just big hearts. So today, that volunteer work was shown off and celebrated at Sharefest. Flinn Middle School, Stiles Elementary and East High School all have a fresh coat of paint lining their school walls and lockers. Thirty-seven hundred volunteers from Heartland Community Church and other local congregations spent their summer months painting, installing carpeting, blinds and fans for the schools. Simple improvements like these go along way in helping the the environment our children learn in. U.S. Department of Education Secretary Kristine Cohn said, "When the boys and girls go into a school that feels fresh.. and that is freshly painted and has that fresh feel to it they are going to make the commitment to their education along with all of the staff." Kristine Cohn is the former Winnebago County Board Chair. It took volunteers 30 thousand hours to repaint the schools. The operating budget for repairs is 11 Million dollars in the hole.
